Reserpine

    
　     Reserpine (3,4,5-tri-methoxybenzoyloxy) As alkoloid obtain from the roots of certain species of Rauwolfia (Apocynaceae), mainly Rauwolfiaserpentina and R. vomitoria, or by synthesis. The material obtained from natural sources may contain closely related alkaloids.
    It occurs as odourless, almost tasteless, fine white or pale buffto slightly yellow coloured crystals or crystalline powder. M.p about 270 degrees with decomposition. It darkens slowly on exposure to light but more rapidly when in solution.practically insoluble in water and ether ; soluble in 1 in 2000 of alcohol, 1 in 90 of acetone, 1 in 6 of chloroform and 1 in 2000 of methyl alcohol; freely soluble in acetic acid. A solution in chloroform in laevorotatory. solutions may be sterilised by filteration. Store in airtight containers. Protect from light.
